The primary pattern is clearly one of Octagons but the joining of the blocks creates secondary patterns of Hourglasses and Stars. This early quilt is made of two indigo prints. Quilting is done in diagonal lines. Two opposing ends have sawtooth borders. The quilt has been professionally laundered and is in very good condition. With careful examination, one can see weaknesses in some of the brown flower centers in the blue used for the body of the quilt. It is odd that the binding is sewn with tiny hand stitches and then gone over with a machine as well. The quilt is registered with the Virginia Quilt Project, registration R3-47. Made circa 1850.
Measurements are 88" x 94".
